Fremont's mahonia provides early spring nectar and pollen to honeybees, supporting colony establishment after winter. Peak bloom occurs from April to June in arid, well-drained sites. This evergreen shrub is highly drought-tolerant once established but requires good drainage to prevent root rot; its spiny leaves offer protection from browsing animals.
